Gill's Lukewarm Reaction to 14-Year-Old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Heroics Sparks Backlash

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has drawn sharp criticism for his restrained remarks following a sensational century by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, which helped Rajasthan Royals chase down a daunting target of 210 with more than four overs to spare on Monday.

The teen prodigy's explosive innings stunned the Titans and left even Gill visibly shaken, yet his post-match comments were noticeably subdued. “It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” Gill remarked, attributing the historic performance partly to fortune rather than talent.

His response, however, did not sit well with former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja. During a discussion on JioStar, Jadeja expressed disappointment over Gill’s implication that luck played a major role in Suryavanshi’s innings. “To suggest it was just a lucky day, that too for a 14-year-old who showed immense self-belief and composure, doesn’t do justice to what we witnessed,” Jadeja said before the segment was interrupted by the presentation ceremony.

Later elaborating on the achievement, Jadeja lauded the teenager’s extraordinary poise under pressure, saying, “To score a century at 14 in the IPL against world-class bowlers is the stuff dreams are made of. Every one of us who grew up playing cricket has imagined such moments. He didn’t just dream it — he lived it.”

Jadeja also credited the nurturing approach of India’s support staff, particularly Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour, for allowing Suryavanshi the freedom to express himself on such a big stage. “It’s not just the performance — it’s the mindset that’s most remarkable,” he added.
