EU Holds Firm Amidst Expanding US Tariffs, Eyes Strategic Countermoves

In a decisive stance, the European Union (EU) is meticulously preparing countermeasures in response to the escalating tariffs imposed by the United States under President Donald Trump's administration. European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic highlighted that current US tariffs affect approximately 70% of EU exports, with potential expansion to 97% as investigations into sectors like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors progress.

The EU faces significant tariffs: 25% on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, and a 10% levy on most other goods, which could double to 20% following the conclusion of a temporary 90-day pause ending on July 8 . During this period, the EU aims to finalize its rebalancing measures and explore all response options.

While the EU has momentarily suspended its own countermeasures on steel to facilitate negotiations, progress has been limited . A task force is analyzing potential increases in imports caused by trade diversion from the US tariffs, with initial findings expected in mid-May.

Commissioner Sefcovic emphasized the EU's preference for a negotiated solution, urging the US to demonstrate readiness for fair and balanced discussions . However, he affirmed that all options remain on the table to ensure a level playing field.

In a bid to alleviate tensions, the EU has proposed increasing purchases of US goods by €50 billion, including liquefied natural gas and agricultural products, to help bridge the trade deficit . Nonetheless, the EU maintains that it will not accept the continuation of the 10% tariffs as a fair outcome.

As the July deadline approaches, the EU stands poised to protect its economic interests, balancing a commitment to dialogue with readiness to implement proportionate countermeasures.
