Newborns in Kerala can now be enrolled for Aadhaar as per the latest directive from the Kerala State IT Mission, the nodal body for Aadhaar services in the state. The instructions outline that infants are eligible for Aadhaar enrollment right after their birth certificate is issued.
Notably, children under five years of age will not have their biometrics—such as fingerprints or iris scans—collected during the initial registration. However, biometric updates are mandatory at the ages of five and fifteen. These updates must be done within specific timelines—before the child turns seven and seventeen, respectively—to avoid Aadhaar deactivation. The updates within this window are free of charge.
Timely biometric updates are crucial for hassle-free registration in major entrance exams such as NEET and JEE. Authorities also stress the importance of linking a mobile number and email to Aadhaar, as many government services now rely on OTP verification for access.
Parents can avail of services like name addition, biometric renewals, and mobile/email linkage for children under five through Akshaya Kendras and authorized Aadhaar centers across the state.
