Kozhikode witnessed a devastating fire on Sunday, which early evaluations suggest has inflicted damages worth ₹75 crore. The most significant impact appears to be on the third floor of the Calicut Textiles godown, where stock losses alone are estimated at ₹50 crore. A comprehensive investigation is scheduled for today to determine the cause of the blaze and assess compliance with building safety norms.
District Collector has been instructed by Chief Secretary Jayathalik to submit a detailed incident report within 48 hours.
The inferno initially erupted within the Calicut Textiles facility, located near the Kozhikode private bus terminal, before rapidly spreading to adjacent commercial units. It took over five hours and extensive effort to bring the flames under control, with the garment storage area being entirely destroyed.
Firefighting efforts were hampered by the structural design of the building, making internal access difficult. Officials also revealed that no architectural blueprints were available, complicating rescue and containment operations.
Ultimately, 14 fire brigade units from multiple districts collaborated in the emergency response. The fire was subdued after parts of the structure were demolished using heavy machinery like a JCB. Prompt evacuation of all occupants prevented a potential tragedy.
