Syro-Malabar Church Offers Heartfelt Blessings to Pope Leo XIV

Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, the spiritual leader of the Syro-Malabar Church, has conveyed warm and prayerful wishes to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the 267th successor to Saint Peter, on the commencement of his papacy. Expressing profound joy and optimism at the beginning of the new pontificate, Mar Raphael noted that Pope Leo XIV’s enthronement is a moment of hope for the universal Church, especially for Eastern traditions.

Highlighting a significant parallel, Mar Raphael recalled that Pope Leo XIII, in his first address to the Eastern Churches, had emphasized the importance of preserving their rich heritage. This reaffirmation, he said, resonates deeply with the Syro-Malabar Church, which is eager for renewed missionary momentum and recognition of its liturgical traditions within the global Catholic framework.

In an era where the Syro-Malabar Church has expanded across continents, the Major Archbishop affirmed that Pope Leo XIV’s inclusive and respectful stance towards Eastern Churches could serve as a vital support in safeguarding their rites and identity. He assured the new pontiff of the Church’s continued prayers as he assumes the mantle of Supreme Pastor, beacon of conscience, and spiritual guide for the world.

Mar Raphael Thattil also participated as a co-celebrant in the solemn ordination ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. The occasion witnessed the presence of Syro-Malabar Curia Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurakkal, Apostolic Administrator for Europe Mar Stephen Chirapanath, alongside numerous clergy, religious, and faithful members of the Syro-Malabar community residing in Rome.
