Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant meteorological event, the southwest monsoon has made an early entrance into Kerala, arriving on May 24, 2025 eight days ahead of its typical onset date of June 1. This marks the earliest arrival of the monsoon in the state since 2009, when it began on May 23.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this early onset to favorable atmospheric conditions, including the formation of a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea, which intensified into a depression. Such developments have accelerated the monsoon's progression, leading to widespread rainfall across Kerala.

The early arrival has brought substantial rainfall to the region, with the IMD issuing red alerts for several districts, including Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, warning of very heavy rainfall until May 27. Orange alerts have been declared for other districts, anticipating rainfall between 11-20 cm.

The heavy rains have led to disruptions in daily life, including waterlogging in urban areas and interruptions in transportation. Authorities have activated emergency protocols, and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding and landslides.

This early monsoon onset is expected to have significant implications for agriculture, particularly for the timely sowing of kharif crops such as rice, maize, and pulses. Farmers are optimistic that the early rains will enhance soil moisture levels, leading to improved crop yields.

However, the early and intense rainfall also raises concerns about potential adverse effects, including crop damage due to waterlogging and increased risk of vector-borne diseases. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely to mitigate any public health risks.

The IMD has also indicated that the monsoon is likely to advance into neighboring states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the coming days, potentially bringing relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions in those regions.
