The events will commence with the city’s formal reception of the Holy Father. At 4:15 p.m. local time, the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, will receive Pope Leo XIV at the Campidoglio, the city’s ancient and symbolic seat of governance. This act of homage represents Rome’s traditional gesture of allegiance and reverence to its bishop, reinforcing the spiritual and civic unity of the city.
Following the tribute, Pope Leo XIV will proceed to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest and most significant of the four papal basilicas, often referred to as the “Mother and Head of all Churches in Rome and the World.” Here, he will ceremonially take possession of his episcopal seat as the Bishop of Rome.
