Washington: In a significant policy shift, the U.S. State Department has temporarily halted the scheduling of new student visa interviews worldwide. This move precedes anticipated stricter social media checks for foreign students under the Trump administration.

The directive, issued via a diplomatic cable from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, instructs consular sections globally to pause adding new appointments for F, M, and J visa categories until further notice. Interviews already scheduled will proceed as planned.

This development follows earlier signals from Secretary Rubio about a tougher approach to student visa vetting. In March, he expressed concerns over students allegedly entering the U.S. not solely for academic purposes but to engage in protests. Citing the case of a Tufts University doctoral student who was arrested after writing an op-ed supporting Gazans, Rubio stated, "We're going to be looking at you."

The suspension of new visa interviews adds to the growing uncertainty for international students, particularly those from India, who are already facing delays in obtaining F1 visa interview appointments. Despite the release of additional visa slots, many students are still waiting, with reported interview wait times exceeding two months in some regions.

This policy change also comes amid a broader crackdown on international students. Recently, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security revoked Harvard University's authorization to admit international students, affecting nearly 6,800 foreign students currently enrolled. The move has sparked legal and political battles, with significant implications for the U.S. higher education landscape.
