Changanassery: Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil paid heartfelt tribute to Venerable Mar Thomas Kuryalassery, describing him as a visionary shepherd who led the Archdiocese of Changanassery with unwavering integrity and spiritual foresight. The Archbishop made these remarks while inaugurating a commemorative symposium held at the Parish Hall of St. Mary’s Metropolitan Church, organized by the Archdiocese to mark the centenary of the late bishop’s passing.
Mar Thomas Kuryalassery, the first bishop of the Archdiocese and founder of its monastic community, was hailed for his belief that true spirituality must begin in the church but extend far beyond its walls. He courageously opposed excessive ceremonial displays among Syrian Catholics and championed a simpler, more unified Church. Archbishop Tharayil emphasized that the legacy of Bishop Kuryalassery is inseparable from the very history and growth of the Archdiocese itself.
The event began with an introductory address by Monsignor Scaria at Kanyakorn. Dr. Kuryas presented a scholarly paper on the bishop’s life at Kumbalakkuzhi, while Vicar General Monsignor Antony A. Thakkad served as moderator for the sessions. Mother Lily Rose Karotuvembenikkal, Provincial Superior of the SABS Changanassery Province, delivered the vote of thanks.
The symposium saw active participation from a wide cross-section of the Archdiocese, including clergy, religious sisters, parish delegates, members of the Pastoral, Forona, and Parish Councils, family group leaders, and catechists. The commemoration culminated in preparation for the death anniversary of Mar Thomas Kuryalassery, which falls on June 2.
