Holy Muron Consecrated for Syro Malabar Diocese of Great Britain

Preston: The sacred ceremony of consecrating Muron (holy oil) for use across the parishes and missions of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Great Britain took place at St. Alphonsus Cathedral in Preston. This solemn rite was conducted under the leadership of the diocesan president, Mar Joseph Srampikkal, and concelebrated by prominent clergy including Mar Sebastian Vadakkel, president of the Ujjain Diocese; diocesan proto-synkellos Rev. Dr. Antony Chundelikat; chancellor Dr. Mathew Pinakkad; cathedral vicar Dr. Babu Puthanpurakkal; procurator Fr. Joe Moolassery; vice-chancellor Rev. Fr. Fanzwa Pathil; alongside other priests ministering throughout the diocese. The homily during the accompanying Holy Mass was delivered by Mar Sebastian Vadakkel.

Mar Sebastian expressed joy at witnessing the growth and vitality of the Syro-Malabar Diocese in Britain, highlighting the church’s organized functioning in multiple locations. He remarked that the sacrament of anointing exemplifies the church’s unity in Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, eternal salvation was secured— a grace that continues to unfold whenever the consecrated oil is applied in parish ministries. This ritual powerfully symbolizes the unity of faith and the oneness of the Church.

Mar Joseph Srampikkal took a moment to thank Rev. Dr. Babu Puthanpurakkal, who is returning to his home diocese after seven years of dedicated service as Cathedral Vicar in Great Britain, wishing him all the best in his future endeavors. Following the Mass, a gathering comprising priests, laity, and mission representatives convened to discuss diocesan matters. Mar Joseph emphasized the importance of the faith community speaking with one unified voice, stressing that this mission calls for the active participation of all members without exception.

Commission leaders outlined upcoming programs and initiatives, while Romils Mathew, Secretary of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, provided insights into activities planned for the Spiritual Year. Representatives from various missions also contributed suggestions and feedback to help shape the diocese’s path forward.
