Ahmedabad: A tragic aviation accident unfolded this afternoon as Air India Flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff, triggering a massive emergency response at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The aircraft, which departed at 1:17 PM, reportedly plunged from an altitude of 825 feet, resulting in a crash just outside the airport perimeter. Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moment they saw the aircraft descending rapidly before impact, followed by thick columns of black smoke billowing from the crash site.
According to preliminary reports, at least 242 passengers were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash. Multiple injuries have been confirmed, although the full extent of casualties is still being assessed. Rescue workers are actively searching the wreckage for survivors.
In response, emergency services were immediately activated. Firefighters, airport security personnel, and medical teams were rushed to the scene, where rescue operations are continuing under extreme urgency. The approach roads to the airport have been sealed off to facilitate unimpeded access for ambulances and support teams.
In an official statement, Air India confirmed the incident:
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
India’s newly appointed Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu issued a statement expressing grief and pledging swift action:
