Palermo: After nearly a year on the seabed, the ill-fated superyacht Bayesian, once the pride of British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, has finally been lifted from the Mediterranean waters off the Sicilian coast. The complex and delicate operation, involving one of Europe’s most powerful maritime cranes, marks a critical milestone in efforts to understand the disaster that claimed seven lives and stunned the global tech and luxury yachting communities.
The 56-meter yacht, which had sunk during a violent and unexpected storm in August 2024, was retrieved from a depth of approximately 50 meters near the fishing town of Porticello. The wreck had rested quietly on the seabed for ten months, becoming both a symbol of tragic loss and an engineering challenge. On Saturday, salvage experts worked meticulously to raise the massive vessel, using high-capacity pumps to expel seawater from the hull while balancing the wreck’s compromised structure.
Before the final lift, crews used remote-operated tools to detach the Bayesian’s towering 72-meter mast — a necessary move to prevent destabilization during the hoisting process. Once partially above water, the yacht revealed significant external damage. The hull was encrusted with mud and debris, and parts of the upper deck were visibly crushed by the intense pressure of the sea and the storm that sent the vessel to the depths.
The Bayesian went down on August 27, 2024, during a sudden Mediterranean squall with wind speeds exceeding 117 kilometers per hour. According to initial findings from the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), the storm developed too rapidly for the crew to escape or stabilize the yacht. The vessel capsized within seconds, leaving 15 survivors clinging to life rafts and debris, while seven others, including Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah, tragically perished.
Authorities have confirmed that the Bayesian will remain suspended throughout the weekend for structural analysis before being towed to the port of Termini Imerese. Once there, it will be handed over to Italian and British investigators to assist in the ongoing international inquiry. The goal is to determine whether design flaws, human error, or unpredictable natural forces were ultimately responsible for the catastrophic sinking of what had been considered one of the safest yachts ever built.
Mike Lynch, a controversial figure in the tech world and founder of Autonomy Corporation, had been facing extradition proceedings in the United States prior to his death. However, in recent years, he had retreated from public view, reportedly focusing on private investments and spending time with his family aboard Bayesian, his seaborne sanctuary.
As recovery efforts conclude, the reappearance of Bayesian has stirred public emotion and renewed calls for tighter safety regulations in the superyacht industry.
