Moderate Earthquake Jolts Central Pakistan: No Casualties Reported

Islamabad: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck central Pakistan in the early hours of Sunday, June 29, sending tremors across the region and momentarily stirring panic among residents. The quake, which occurred at approximately 3:54 a.m. IST, had its epicentre located around 149 kilometers west of Multan in Punjab province, according to data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded the seismic activity, placing the epicentre about 60 kilometers north-northeast of Barkhan, a rugged area in Balochistan province. The quake was reported to have originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, classifying it as a shallow earthquake the type that typically causes more noticeable shaking on the surface.

India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) registered a slightly lower magnitude of 5.2 and noted the coordinates of the epicentre at latitude 30.25°N and longitude 69.82°E, with a deeper depth estimate of 150 kilometers. Despite the moderate magnitude, the tremor caused no reported damage to infrastructure, nor were there any casualties or injuries confirmed at the time of reporting.

The earthquake occurred in a tectonically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide, making Pakistan highly susceptible to seismic events. The country has witnessed several devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and more recent tremors in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that resulted in significant loss of life and property.

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents in the affected areas to remain cautious, particularly in the event of aftershocks, which are common following moderate seismic activity. Emergency services remain on standby, although the initial assessment suggests no immediate threats.

This incident once again highlights the urgent need for improved earthquake preparedness and resilient infrastructure in Pakistan, especially in regions with vulnerable populations and limited access to emergency services. While the nation has avoided a disaster this time, experts warn that future quakes may not be as forgiving.
