Syro-Malabar Media Commission Condemns Education Department’s Move to Hold Assessment Camp on Saint Thomas Day

Kochi: The Syro-Malabar Media Commission has sharply criticized the Kerala Education Department’s decision to conduct a mandatory teachers’ assessment camp on July 3rd, observed by Indian Christians as Saint Thomas Day. The Commission denounced the move as a direct infringement on the religious freedom of Catholic teachers.

In a statement issued Monday, the Commission described the decision as “a deliberate and insensitive act” that obstructs the community’s right to worship. “Saint Thomas Day is a solemn occasion that commemorates the martyrdom of the Apostle who brought Christianity to India. Forcing Catholic teachers to attend official duties on this sacred day are not only unjust but also deeply offensive,” the statement said.

The Commission further pointed out that the Christian community has long petitioned for Saint Thomas Day to be restored as a public holiday in Kerala. “Instead of responding positively to this legitimate and historical demand, the authorities have chosen to deepen the wound by scheduling professional duties on the very day of religious observance,” it added.

Calling the move “reprehensible and discriminatory,” the Media Commission urged the Education Department to revoke the decision and to ensure that the religious rights of minority communities are respected. It also warned that such actions alienate a significant section of society and go against the secular values enshrined in the Constitution.

Saint Thomas Day, celebrated on July 3rd, holds special significance for Christians in India, especially in Kerala, where the Apostle Thomas is believed to have arrived in 52 AD. The day is marked with prayer, liturgical celebrations, and remembrance of the apostolic legacy that shaped the foundations of Indian Christianity.
