Texas: In the aftermath of devastating floods that swept through Kerrville and surrounding areas in Kerr County, the Catholic Church has stepped forward with compassion and action, offering vital support to those grappling with loss and displacement.
Following days of relentless rainfall that caused rivers to surge beyond their banks, Catholic organizations, including Catholic Charities USA, have been actively involved in emergency relief efforts. The Archdiocese of San Antonio announced the opening of a dedicated relief and assistance center at 929 Main Street, welcoming anyone in need of shelter, food, or basic necessities.
The relief efforts are being spearheaded by Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller and Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulet, who personally traveled to Kerrville to meet with affected families, offer comfort, and oversee aid distribution. Their visit reflected not only the Church's concern for physical needs but also its deep commitment to spiritual solidarity.
At Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville, a special Mass was held on Sunday, July 6, honoring the memory of those lost, praying for the safety of the missing, and uplifting the survivors. Archbishop García-Siller, alongside Fr. Scott Janicek, presided over the Eucharistic celebration, invoking God’s mercy and strength for a grieving community.
The Church’s outreach is holistic: food, clean water, clothing, hygiene supplies, and emotional support are all part of the ongoing mission. Archbishop García-Siller emphasized that the Church stands ready to serve, echoing the words of Christ to “love one another,” especially in moments of collective suffering.
On social media, the Archdiocese of San Antonio urged the faithful and wider community to join in prayer for the flood victims, the deceased, and the many still unaccounted for.
“We stand with the people of Kerrville not just in words, but in works,” the Archdiocese wrote, “and we invite all people of goodwill to carry them in their hearts and in their prayers.”
As the waters begin to recede, the Catholic Church continues to be a beacon of hope offering not only material aid but a reminder that, even amid disaster, no one is left to suffer alone.
