New Delhi: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) deeply mourns the demise of Archbishop Dr. Mar Aprem, the former Head of the Chaldean Syrian Church in India. He entered eternal rest at the age of 85, after having served the Church with distinction and unwavering commitment for over five decades.
Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI, expressed his profound grief and personal sorrow at the passing of Archbishop Mar Aprem.
He expressed that it was with a heavy heart and deep personal sorrow that he received the news of the passing of Archbishop Dr. Mar Aprem, the former Head of the Chaldean Syrian Church in India. On behalf of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), and in his own name, he offered heartfelt condolences and prayers for the eternal repose of his noble soul.
Archbishop Thazhath described Archbishop Mar Aprem as more than just a prominent ecclesial figure - he was a towering presence in the Christian landscape of India. A man of deep faith, sharp intellect, and quiet strength, he faithfully shepherded his Church with unwavering dedication, wisdom, and compassion. His contributions to the life of the Church and to society at large were truly remarkable.
Archbishop Thazhath shared his personal admiration for Archbishop Mar Aprem’s humility, scholarly depth, and profound love for the Eastern Christian patrimony, particularly the Syriac liturgical and linguistic tradition. As a prolific author, theologian, and church historian, he leaves behind a treasure of thought and testimony. His efforts toward Christian unity and interfaith harmony will continue to inspire those engaged in dialogue and mission.
He added that Archbishop Mar Aprem was not only respected within his own Church but held in high regard by the wider Christian community and by people of other faiths. His ecumenical vision and steadfast commitment to the Gospel made him a bridge-builder and a beacon of hope.
As the Church grieves the loss of this faithful servant of God, Archbishop Thazhath said they also give thanks for his long and fruitful life. The CBCI stands in prayerful solidarity with the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful of the Chaldean Syrian Church in India during this time of mourning.
