Brother Amal Geerakasseriyil O. Praem Receives Minor Order of Lectorate in Solemn Ceremony at Mananthavady

Mananthavady: In a moment of deep spiritual significance and ecclesiastical solemnity, Bro. Amal Geerakasseriyil O. Praem of the Norbertine Canonry in Mananthavady was conferred with the Karoya pattam, the Minor Order of Lectorate, marking a vital step in his spiritual journey toward priestly service.

The sacred rite took place today, Thursday, July 10, at the Norbertine monastery chapel, under the solemn auspices of His Excellency Mar Alex Tharamangalam, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Mananthavady. The ceremonial conferral was richly imbued with the liturgical traditions of the Syro-Malabar Church and was conducted through the ancient ritual of the laying on of hands. Assisting in the ordination were Dr. Fr. Jose Murickan O. Praem, the esteemed Prelate of the Canonry of Mananthavady, and Sub-Prior Fr. Santhosh Thekkayil.

The Lectorate is the first of the minor orders in the Syro-Malabar rite, entrusting the recipient with the duty to proclaim the Word of God in the assembly of the faithful. As a newly ordained lector, Bro. Amal is now officially commissioned to publicly read the Scriptures particularly the Old Testament during liturgical celebrations, thus becoming a minister of the Word in its most sacred expression.

During the ceremony, Bro. Amal was solemnly vested in two traditional liturgical garments. The Kotina (robe) was draped upon him, signifying his inner transformation and call to live as a "new man" rooted in Christ. Alongside it, he was girded with the Sunara (girdle), an emblem of spiritual chastity and moral discipline, essential attributes for one who will proclaim divine truths to the faithful.

A ceremonial presentation of the Book of the Old Testament followed, symbolizing his official role as a herald of God’s Word. This rite not only marks his spiritual progress within the Norbertine vocation but also affirms his growing responsibility in the life of the Church.

The Norbertine community, joined by family, friends, and well-wishers, offered their heartfelt congratulations and extended fervent prayers for Bro. Amal as he steps into this new ecclesial ministry. The celebration was not only a personal milestone but also a moment of joy for the entire Canonry, reflecting the vibrant continuity of religious life and formation.

As Bro. Amal embraces this foundational stage in his sacred calling, the community joins in prayer, echoing the time-honored Latin blessing: Ad multos annos! May he serve the Lord for many blessed years to come.
