Malawi Prepares to Host Historic First National Eucharistic Congress

Lilongwe: Excitement is building across Malawi as the country readies itself for its inaugural National Eucharistic Congress, set to take place from August 5 to 9 in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe. The landmark event, a spiritual milestone for the nation’s Catholic community, is being organized as part of the global 2025 Jubilee Year observances.

Themed “Holy Communion: Source and Summit of Pilgrims of Hope,” the Congress will mark a moment of deep reflection, unity, and renewal for the faithful. The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB), which spearheads the initiative, envisions the gathering as a transformative occasion that will rekindle Eucharistic devotion and strengthen the Church’s mission in society.

According to the organizing committee, the Congress will focus on revitalizing the Catholic faith, fostering ecclesial unity, and encouraging deeper love for the Holy Eucharist. Fr. Joseph Sikweise, the Congress coordinator, emphasized that the event is designed to spark both personal conversion and social renewal, encouraging participants to live out their faith with greater conviction.

In the lead-up to the event, parishes across Malawi have begun weekly Eucharistic Adoration, catechesis, and faith formation programs to prepare the faithful spiritually. Organizers hope that the Congress will inspire a lasting culture of Eucharistic reverence and a renewed sense of mission among laypeople, clergy, and religious alike.

With roughly one-third of the nation’s population identifying as Catholic, the Church plays a pivotal role in Malawi’s education, healthcare, and social services. The Eucharistic Congress is seen not just as a spiritual celebration but as a symbol of the Church’s continued commitment to the nation's development through faith and service.

As Malawi counts down to this historic gathering, anticipation is rising that the Eucharistic Congress will be a defining chapter in the Church’s journey, igniting a new flame of hope and devotion among the faithful.
