Gunman Kills Two and Injures Several Including State Trooper in Kentucky Church Shooting Rampage

Lexington, Kentucky – A tragic series of shootings unfolded on Sunday, July 13, 2025, when a man opened fire at multiple locations in and around Lexington, resulting in three deaths—including the shooter—and multiple injuries, including a critically injured Kentucky State Trooper and two churchgoers.

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. near Blue Grass Airport, where a Kentucky State Police trooper attempted a routine traffic stop after a license plate reader alerted to the suspect's vehicle. The driver, later identified as the shooter, opened fire on the trooper and then fled the scene. The trooper was left critically injured and was later transported for emergency surgery. Authorities have since confirmed that he is in stable condition.

Following the initial attack, the suspect carjacked another vehicle without harming the driver and drove approximately 15 miles to Richmond Road Baptist Church. The church, known for its small, tight-knit congregation, was in the middle of Sunday services when the assailant entered and began firing. Two women were killed in the attack—34-year-old Christina Combs and 72-year-old Beverly Gumm. Two men also sustained gunshot wounds, with one in critical condition and the other reported to be stable.

Lexington police officers quickly responded to the scene and engaged the shooter. The suspect was shot and killed by officers inside the church. Three officers discharged their weapons, all of whom were wearing active body cameras. They have been placed on administrative leave pending a routine internal investigation.

Officials have not yet publicly released the shooter’s identity or confirmed a motive, though authorities suggest a possible personal connection to individuals within the church. The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading the external investigation, and the Lexington Police Department's Public Integrity Unit is reviewing the officers’ response and use of force.

Governor Andy Beshear condemned the violence as senseless and extended prayers to the victims and their families. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman also expressed sorrow, particularly over the shooting taking place inside a house of worship. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers called it an "extremely difficult day" for both law enforcement and the local community.

The shootings temporarily disrupted operations at Blue Grass Airport, but authorities confirmed that all flights resumed shortly afterward, and the airport remained operational.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is working to establish the shooter’s background, potential motives, and his connections to those targeted at the church. The community, meanwhile, mourns the loss of innocent lives and prays for the recovery of those injured.
