KCYM Senate Urges Urgent Action to Protect Farmers and Preserve Agriculture

Mananthavady: The 31st half-yearly senate of the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) Mananthavady Diocese turned into a powerful platform advocating for the protection of agriculture and farmers, especially in ecologically sensitive and agrarian-dependent regions like Wayanad. Held at the Kurambala unit under the leadership of the Thariyod region, the senate called for immediate and strategic governmental intervention to uphold the agrarian backbone of Kerala.

Former KCYM diocesan president Mathew Tharayil formally inaugurated the session, which was presided over by current diocesan president Bibin Pilapilly. In a key resolution presented by state member Tjin Joseph Vellaplakil, the youth body emphasized the urgent need to revamp and reinforce policies that support mountain-region farmers ranging from comprehensive crop insurance to a functional farmers' protection board and swift compensation for damages caused by wild animals.

The resolution didn’t stop at policy demands; it echoed the voice of a generation deeply connected to its soil. The gathering discussed the importance of agriculture in shaping rural identity and stability, warning that without proactive efforts, the region risks losing both its heritage and livelihoods.

The senate also featured the presentation of regional and diocesan reports and reviews of major organizational activities. Regions and units that made remarkable contributions to key KCYM campaigns such as My Village, Green Future, and the Month of Action were especially commended for their ground-level impact.

The event was graced by the presence of Diocese Director Fr. Santo Ambalathara, Vice President Ashna Palarikunnel, General Secretary Vimal Kochupurakkal, Secretary Duna Maria Kizhakke Mannur, Treasurer Naveen Pulakudiyil, and Animator Sr. Ross Tom SABS. Members of the Diocesan Syndicate also played a key role in coordinating the day’s discussions.

With a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship and farmer welfare, KCYM Mananthavady’s senate stood firm in its mission: to be the voice of the voiceless, and guardians of both creation and community.
