Red Alert Triggers School Closures in Northern Kerala Districts on July 18

Thiruvananthapuram: In response to severe weather conditions and the issuance of a red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), district authorities across Kasaragod, Wayanad, and Kannur have announced holidays for all educational institutions on Friday, July 18.

With torrential rains battering Kasaragod district, major rivers have breached their banks, flooding several low-lying regions. In light of worsening conditions, the District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions across the district. This includes schools, colleges, professional institutions, Kendriya Vidyalayas, madrasas, tuition centers, Anganwadis, and special coaching classes.

However, authorities clarified that all previously scheduled examinations including university, professional, and departmental exams will proceed without any change in date or time.

Wayanad, already grappling with heavy downpours, has also been placed under a red alert for July 18. The district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions except residential campuses on Friday. The order covers professional colleges, religious schools, tuition centers, and Anganwadis, though scheduled examinations will continue as planned.

In Kannur, where the IMD has also raised a red alert, the district administration has taken preemptive action by closing all schools, Anganwadis, religious learning centers, and tuition classes on July 18. The decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the threat of extreme weather.

Authorities in all three districts have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid flooded areas, and monitor official updates from disaster management units. Emergency services remain on high alert as the monsoon surge continues to impact northern Kerala.
