Kakkanad: The protest that took place at Udayamperoor Soonahados Church on Sunday, July 20, was a shocking breach of the sacredness of the Holy Eucharist. This was not just an act of dissent but a disruption so extreme and irreverent that even non-Christians would hesitate to act in such a manner.
Interrupting the Holy Qurbana with such aggression reflects a deep disregard for the heart of Catholic worship. The demand to introduce the "Versus populum" form in a parish that has been peacefully celebrating the Holy Qurbana in the Unified Form, following the decision of the Syro-Malabar Bishops' Synod, appears to be a deliberate attempt to spark conflict and division. Such conduct undermines the sincere efforts of Church leaders who are working patiently and prayerfully to resolve differences.
Even though the Unified Form has been introduced in many places with peace and devotion, the Syro-Malabar Church continues to face intense criticism. This raises serious concerns that certain groups may be intentionally misusing the liturgical issue as a cover to discredit the Church, its institutions, and its leadership. Their goal seems not to be constructive reform but to weaken unity and disrupt the spiritual life of the faithful.
What is most distressing is that these protests have now descended into acts of outright disrespect and sacrilege. Despite the Church’s willingness to engage in dialogue in the true spirit of Christian love and patience, these individuals have chosen the path of confrontation. Their actions desecrating holy places, insulting the Eucharist, and defaming Church leaders reveal a troubling attitude that cannot be reconciled with the values of the faith.
It is deeply alarming that our community has reached a point where reverence and faith seem to be eroding so quickly that even the Eucharist, the living remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice, is no longer safe from protest and conflict. This situation calls for serious reflection. Are there hidden agendas behind these efforts to disturb the peace and devotion of the Church and drive the faithful away from the altar?
At this crucial time, believers must remain watchful and prayerful. These public demonstrations are not acts of love for the Church or expressions of genuine concern for the faith. They are driven by personal motives and ambitions that do not serve the body of Christ. The faithful must recognize this dangerous trend for what it is and stand united in defense of the Church, the Eucharist, and the sacred unity of our spiritual heritage.
