Taiwan and EU Face Shared Threats of Foreign Interference, Says President Lai

Taipei: President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan emphasized on Tuesday that both Taiwan and the European Union are united not just by their commitment to democratic ideals, but also by the common threat of foreign infiltration aimed at destabilizing their political systems.

During a meeting with members of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield at the Presidential Office in Taipei, Lai highlighted that although Taiwan and the EU do not share formal diplomatic ties, their partnership is rooted in shared values particularly democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights.

Lai remarked that in recent years, both Taiwan and the EU have come under pressure from external actors attempting to influence democratic elections, spread disinformation, and foster societal discord. While he did not name specific sources during the speech, Taiwan has consistently accused China of waging cyber and information warfare to disrupt its democratic processes and weaken public confidence in governance. China, however, has rejected these claims, accusing Taiwan of exaggerating threats to further its own political objectives.

Meanwhile, several EU member states have expressed similar concerns over Russian interference in domestic politics and elections, with allegations of misinformation campaigns and attempts to erode institutional trust. Moscow denies these accusations.

President Lai reiterated Taiwan’s intention to remain a bastion of democratic resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. "Democracies do not exist to confront others, but to protect a cherished way of life," Lai said. "Just as Europe defends pluralism and human rights, Taiwan stands ready to cooperate in preserving peace, freedom, and stability around the globe."

The meeting comes at a time when China and the EU are preparing for a high-level summit in Beijing to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations, even as tensions simmer over trade disputes and diverging geopolitical interests.

Lai concluded by expressing Taiwan’s willingness to share its experience in defending democracy, offering it as a model and partner in global efforts to safeguard democratic systems from foreign manipulation.
