Detroit: In a powerful message to the participants of Pax Christi USA’s National Assembly, Pope Leo XIV has underscored the urgent need for continued commitment to nonviolence in an increasingly fractured and conflict-ridden world.
Addressing the assembly gathered in Detroit from July 25 to 27 under the theme “Reclaiming the Power of Nonviolence in a Broken World,” the Pope acknowledged the intensifying challenges of global warfare, societal divisions, and forced migration. “In a world marred by violence, conflict, and displacement, the mission to foster nonviolence has never been more critical,” he emphasized.
The Pope’s message, delivered during the opening ceremony on Friday evening, called participants to draw strength from the example of the Risen Christ. “After the brutality of the Crucifixion, Christ’s first words to His disciples were of peace a peace that is gentle, unarmed, and enduring,” he reminded them. This peace, he said, should shape the mission of every Christian today.
Pope Leo further encouraged Pax Christi members to live out this call by becoming peacemakers in their communities especially in areas where society is most fractured. “The Church must be a visible sign of reconciliation not only within its walls but in neighbourhoods and on the margins of society,” he urged.
Looking ahead, the Holy Father expressed his hope that the national gathering would energize Pax Christi USA to cultivate “houses of peace” places where dialogue replaces conflict, justice is lived, and forgiveness becomes a habit.
“In building such communities,” he added, “you help many more people to respond to Saint Paul’s timeless call to live in peace with one another.”
Pope Leo concluded by entrusting the assembly’s mission to the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and offered his Apostolic Blessing to all attendees a gesture of encouragement as they continue their witness to the Gospel of Peace in a world longing for healing.
