Mar Makil: A Visionary Shepherd and the Joseph of the Knanaya Community, Says Major Archbishop Thattil

Kottayam: In a heartfelt tribute to one of the most revered figures of the Syro-Malabar Church, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil described Mar Mathew Makil, the first Vicar Apostolic of Changanassery and later of the Kottayam Vicariate, as “the Joseph of the Old Testament” for the Knanaya community. The Archbishop was speaking at the official beatification ceremony of Mar Makil and the concluding commemoration of the 50th death anniversary of Archbishop Thomas Tharayil, both solemnly observed at Christ the King Cathedral, Kottayam.

Praising Mar Makil’s unwavering commitment to the spiritual and cultural identity of the Knanaya faithful, Mar Thattil said, “He was a man who not only nurtured a dream for the Knanaya community but also carried that dream in his heart with great affection and clarity, just like Joseph of old.” He went on to call Mar Makeel a visionary leader, whose thoughts and initiatives laid the foundational stones for the community’s spiritual growth and institutional strength.

Mar Thattil emphasized that the beatification of Mar Makil is not only a moment of joy for the Knanaya community but also a shared celebration for the entire Syro-Malabar Church. “The unique identity and tradition of the Knanaya community are not barriers but wings that help it soar forward in the universal Church,” he added.

Referring to the current flourishing of the Kottayam Archdiocese, the Archbishop remarked that it is largely the fruit of Mar Makil’s prophetic vision, which inspired generations of clergy, religious, and laity alike. “He dreamed beyond his time and inspired others to live that dream. The legacy of his devotion, discipline, and pastoral care continues to resonate,” Mar Thattil noted.

Mar Mathew Makil, also the founder of the Visitation Congregation, is remembered not just as a church leader, but as a pioneer who built a future for his people, with deep roots in faith and heritage.
