Arrest of Nuns a Grave Breach of Constitutional Freedoms: CRI Kanjirapally and Diocesan Lay Movements Condemn Incident

Kanjirapally: The Conference of Religious India (CRI), Kanjirapally Unit representing various religious congregations within the diocese and allied lay organizations have jointly voiced deep concern and condemnation over the unjust arrest of Christian nuns in Chhattisgarh, calling it a blatant violation of constitutional guarantees.

The arrested nuns were reportedly subjected to a mob-style interrogation and falsely implicated under charges of forced religious conversion and human trafficking allegations that the Church groups have denounced as baseless and malicious. According to the statement, such acts amount to a direct assault on the fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution, particularly the freedom of conscience and the right to profess and propagate one’s faith.

The misuse of the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Act to falsely implicate the nuns, especially in full view of law enforcement officers who remained passive during the mob aggression, is deeply alarming. The joint statement warned that such actions reflect a dangerous collapse of state responsibility, where governance begins to bend under the pressure of communal forces.

The CRI Kanjirapally and the Diocesan Lay Coordination Forum strongly criticized the complicity or inaction of the police in allowing such vigilante justice to unfold. They cautioned that law enforcement agencies must not function as tools in the hands of radical elements, and emphasized that the State must uphold its duty to protect citizens particularly those who dedicate their lives to service.

In a forceful call to action, the organizations demanded that immediate steps be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. They urged the government to hold accountable those responsible for the wrongful arrest and to ensure that constitutional protections for all communities are implemented without bias or fear.
