Thalassery: Widespread protests erupted across 19 forane centers under the Archdiocese of Thalassery, condemning the arrest of two nuns from the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate congregation in Durg, Chhattisgarh.
Sr. Vandana Francis and Sr. Preethi Maria, belonging to the Udayagiri parish, were reportedly arrested by the Chhattisgarh police on alleged charges of human trafficking. However, Church leaders and faithful claim that the accusations are baseless and part of a larger attempt to harass Christian missionaries.
The protest vigils, organized by the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) and the Syro-Malabar Youth Movement (SMYM), expressed strong solidarity with the arrested nuns and called for their immediate release. Participants held placards, candles, and banners in peaceful demonstrations, voicing concerns over religious freedom and the safety of missionaries serving in vulnerable regions.
The Archdiocese of Thalassery has reaffirmed its commitment to truth and justice, standing firm in support of the wrongly accused nuns.
