Bumrah Steps Back: India Faces Major Setback Ahead of Asia Cup 2025 in UAE

New Delhi: India’s Asia Cup campaign has taken an early blow even before the first ball is bowled. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly pulled out of the tournament scheduled from September 9 to 28 in the UAE. According to top sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the decision is part of workload management ahead of the busy international calendar.

Bumrah, who turned 31 this year, has already bowled nearly 120 overs in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England and picked up 14 wickets. With a long home season and the ICC T20 World Cup looming next year, the team management is believed to have opted for caution over aggression.

This year’s Asia Cup, set to be played in the T20 format, will act as a crucial rehearsal for the World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026. While India’s playing XI may see strategic reshuffling in Bumrah’s absence, the bigger concern will be replacing his experience and ability to deliver under pressure.

The tournament features eight teams, including ICC full members India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. They are joined by UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong top performers from the 2024 ICC Premier Cup.

The group-stage fixtures promise intense action, with the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash scheduled for September 14. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.

While fans are disappointed about Bumrah's absence, team insiders suggest it’s a tactical decision aimed at ensuring his peak form and fitness for the bigger challenges ahead.
