Pope Leo to African Catholic Congress: Let Hope Guide the Future of the Church

Vatican City: In a heartfelt video message to the participants of the Third Congress of the Pan African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network (PACTPAN), Pope Leo emphasized the power of hope as a guiding light for the Church in Africa. Addressing clergy, theologians, and pastoral workers gathered under the theme “Journeying together in hope as Church Family of God in Africa”, the Pope called for unity, resilience, and trust in divine providence amidst the continent’s unique challenges.

Reflecting on the Christian virtues, Pope Leo spotlighted hope as a crucial spiritual compass often overshadowed by faith and charity. “Hope,” he said, “is the virtue that urges us to long for the joy of Heaven. It bridges our belief in God and our love for others. Even in times of hardship, hope is what drives us forward and keeps us rooted in our mission.”

The Pope acknowledged Africa’s complex realities social, political, and economic yet insisted that the Church must continue to serve as a beacon of light. “Africa, like all regions, bears its burdens. But rather than despair, the Church is called to radiate Christ’s light,” he declared.

Urging PACTPAN members to embrace their identity as a family of God, Pope Leo underscored the importance of community. “We must never walk alone. In the Church family, we carry each other’s burdens, support one another, and offer comfort through faith.” He reminded attendees that familial love and solidarity are the first places where hope is cultivated.

Pope Leo also encouraged the development of vibrant local churches that act as safety nets for both believers and society at large, especially those pushed to the margins. “Pastoral care is not a theory. It’s an action,” he said. “Live what you believe. Let theology speak through programs that heal, welcome, and awaken.”

Founded in 2019, PACTPAN is a collaborative platform for African Catholic scholars, clergy, and grassroots workers, promoting interdisciplinary research and advocacy for those without a voice. The Pope applauded its mission and urged its members to persevere in building an inclusive, hope-filled Church rooted in truth and love.

In closing, Pope Leo invoked blessings upon the Congress and reaffirmed his solidarity: “May your reflections bear fruit, and may hope never fade from your hearts.”
