Sanju’s Spot Under Threat? Gill, Jaiswal Likely to Return for Asia Cup

New Delhi: With the Asia Cup 2025 set to begin in September, India’s T20 squad could see major shakeups as star batters Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Sai Sudharsan are reportedly in line for a comeback, according to sources close to team management. This development has triggered concerns for current opener Sanju Samson, who may find himself sidelined.

The selection panel is expected to meet by the end of this month to finalize the squad. While Sanju and Abhishek Sharma are currently opening in the shortest format, the explosive IPL performance of the returning trio is hard to ignore. Jaiswal smashed 559 runs at a fiery strike rate of 160 in IPL 2025. Gill, with 650 runs at over 155 strike rate, was equally lethal. But it was Sudharsan who stole the show, finishing with 759 runs and clinching the Orange Cap.

India is likely to use the Asia Cup as a testing ground for its final blueprint for the 2026 T20 World Cup. This means priority may be given to youth and form, raising questions about the role of senior players like Sanju Samson in the upcoming campaign.

The Asia Cup will run from September 9 to 28. Immediately after, India is scheduled to play a brief Test series against the West Indies. Selectors are reportedly considering rotating players between formats to manage workloads. If Gill and Jaiswal are rested for the Test series, it may provide a lifeline to Sanju to retain his T20 spot at least for now.

The final squad announcement is likely to spark further debate on team combinations, as the competition for top-order slots intensifies.
