Holy See Reaffirms Support for Indigenous Peoples, Highlights Role of Women

At a special session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday, the Holy See’s Permanent Observer, Monsignor Juan Antonio Cruz Serrano, reiterated the Vatican’s solidarity with indigenous communities, with a special focus on indigenous women.

Speaking during the commemoration of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples and the Eighth Inter-American Week of Indigenous Peoples, Msgr. Cruz Serrano emphasized the need to “promote and safeguard their fundamental rights.” He noted that the session’s theme, “Through the Voice of Indigenous Women: Visibility, Leadership, Rights, and Economic Autonomy,” underscores the crucial role of women in shaping society.

The Holy See, he said, encourages indigenous women to be recognized as “active protagonists” in building a common future, rather than mere “passive beneficiaries” of external policies. This advocacy, he added, is rooted in the Church’s commitment to honoring indigenous cultures, respecting spiritual traditions, and preserving native languages and customs.

Highlighting the Church’s ongoing engagement, Msgr Cruz Serrano pointed to the “intensive” work of episcopal conferences, dioceses, parishes, missions, and networks such as the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM). These initiatives, he said, focus on education, healthcare, and empowerment, enabling indigenous peoples to become leaders in their own communities.

The Holy See also expressed appreciation for the OAS’s outreach to vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls, and pledged continued support for efforts to amplify indigenous voices, protect their rights, and ensure their full participation in society.
