Castel Gandolfo: Celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15, 2025, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the enduring power of Mary’s song, the Magnificat, and its message of hope for the humble, the faithful, and the hungry in spirit.
During Mass at the Pontifical Parish of Saint Thomas of Villanova, the Holy Father marveled at how Mary’s “yes” to God continues to shape history and strengthens the faithful in the present day. “In Mary of Nazareth, we recognize our own story and the Church’s journey, immersed in the common lot of humanity,” he said.
The Pope emphasized that God’s Kingdom advances when individuals echo Mary’s consent, saying that the Cross exemplifies trust, love, and forgiveness prevailing over death. He noted that the Magnificat embodies the light and fruitfulness of Mary’s life, extending to the Church and all humanity whenever God’s Word is welcomed.
Highlighting contemporary challenges, Pope Leo observed that God breaks through despair through acts of fraternity, solidarity, and witness. He praised poor and persecuted Christian communities, calling them the Church’s enduring fruitfulness and the first signs of the Kingdom to come.
“Mary’s union of grace and freedom inspires trust, courage, and active participation in God’s work,” the Pope said. He urged the faithful to embrace life and hope courageously, even when it seems risky, reminding them that discipleship is driven by love, not self-interest.
Concluding his homily, Pope Leo affirmed that true life flourishes when individuals and the Church live beyond themselves, allowing love and faith to triumph over fear and despair.
