Changanassery: A new chapter in honoring the memory of the late Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil is set to begin with the formation of the Archbishop Joseph Powathil Foundation, a public trust that will work across religious, educational, and social fields.
The decision was finalized at a preparatory meeting held in Changanassery under the leadership of Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil. The session, which brought together bishops, clergy, and lay leaders, reflected on the enduring contributions of Archbishop Pavathil and emphasized the need to institutionalize his vision. Bishop Mar Thomas Padiyath and Fr. Jomon Nalpathilchira outlined the foundation’s mission, underscoring its commitment to promoting religious harmony, ecumenical dialogue, protection of minority rights, and excellence in education and culture.
The foundation has set out an ambitious roadmap to engage with both Church and society. It will organize debates, seminars, conferences, and publications aimed at nurturing informed discussion on pressing social, cultural, and political issues. At its heart, the trust will also institute the Archbishop Mar Joseph Pavathil Memorial Lecture, to be held annually, ensuring that the Archbishop’s thoughts and values continue to inspire new generations.
The Archbishop Joseph Pavathil Foundation will be guided by a strong leadership team with Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil as Patron. The other office bearers include:
• Dr. Cyriac Thomas – Chairman
• Rev. Dr. Philip Nel Purapparambil – Vice Chairman
• Prof. Dr. P.J. Thomas – Secretary
• Fr. James Kunnath – Joint Secretary
• Adv. George Parambil – Treasurer
Together, the team aims to steer the foundation as a platform for dialogue, unity, and social progress.
The official inauguration of the foundation has been scheduled for December 2025, with plans for a public event that will bring together clergy, intellectuals, and community leaders. Organizers believe that this initiative will help carry forward Archbishop Pavathil’s legacy of faith, justice, and social responsibility, offering inspiration to both the Church and the wider society.
