Kochi: The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCCB) has appointed Fr. Thomas Shaiju Chirayil as the new Secretary of its Anti-Alcohol Commission, a key body working to address alcohol abuse and related social challenges in Kerala.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at the Pontifical Oriental Institute (POCI) in the presence of the Commission Chairman, Mar Theodosius Yohannan. Fr. Chirayil, from the Alappuzha Diocese, brings extensive experience in pastoral care and community outreach.
He has previously served as the Director of the De-Addiction Centre in Alappuzha Diocese and as the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Cherthala Maithara Market. Fr. Chirayil has also been actively involved with the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC) Anti-Alcohol Committee.
With his appointment, the Commission aims to strengthen its efforts in combating alcohol-related issues through awareness programs, community engagement, and support services for individuals and families affected by alcoholism. The move reflects the Church's ongoing commitment to social welfare and proactive involvement in addressing pressing societal concerns.
Under Fr. Chirayil’s leadership, the KCCB Anti-Alcohol Commission is expected to intensify collaborations with various stakeholders to create a more informed and resilient community across Kerala.
