Bronze Statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis Captivates Social Media

Assisi: Images of a striking new bronze statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis are circulating widely on social media, capturing the imagination of the faithful and art lovers alike. The statue, located outside the Church of St. Mary Major in Assisi where Carlo is buried is drawing thousands of visitors ahead of his canonization next month.

Created by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, the artwork portrays Carlo at the foot of the cross, holding a laptop in one hand. The laptop screen depicts the body and blood of Jesus, symbolizing Carlo’s devotion to Christ and his embrace of technology as a tool for faith. A small slingshot rests in Carlo’s backpack, a nod to the biblical story of David and Goliath. Schmalz explained, “I wanted to show that this is a modern-day slingshot a young man using technology to confront the ‘Goliath’ of media that often trivializes Christian faith and spirituality.”

The sculpture also incorporates a cross, honoring Saint Francis of Assisi, whom Carlo admired deeply. “Blessed Carlo loved Saint Francis, and I wanted to reflect that spiritual connection,” the artist said.

Unveiled on August 15, the statue has already become a focal point for pilgrims visiting Carlo’s tomb. With canonization scheduled for September 7, the bronze figure not only celebrates Carlo’s life but also inspires young believers to merge faith with modern tools.
