Kochi: The Syro-Malabar Church has entrusted a key responsibility to Mon. Dr. John Thekkekkara, appointing him as the official Liaison Officer to handle matters of the Church with the Kerala government. The appointment, issued by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil on August 8, underscores the Church’s intent to strengthen communication and cooperation with the state administration on ecclesiastical, social, and welfare concerns.
Mon. Thekkekkara currently serves as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Changanassery and is also the parish priest of Lourdes Forona Church, Thiruvananthapuram. His elevation to this new post reflects both his pastoral experience and his administrative expertise.
Born in 1970, he hails from Itthithanam, the son of Thekkekkara Varghese and Thresyamma. After completing his priestly formation, he was ordained in 1997 by Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil. Beyond his spiritual service, Mon. Thekkekkara has a strong academic and professional background in healthcare. He earned a doctorate in hospital administration and previously served as the Assistant Director of St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, a role that sharpened his skills in management, governance, and institutional leadership.
The appointment is considered significant at a time when the Syro-Malabar Church continues to engage with the Kerala government on issues ranging from education, healthcare, and land policies to social justice and community welfare. Having a dedicated Liaison Officer is expected to streamline discussions, present the Church’s perspectives effectively, and ensure constructive collaboration on matters affecting both the Church and the wider society.
Church insiders say Mon. Thekkekkara’s blend of pastoral sensitivity and professional expertise makes him well-suited for the role. His prior experience in both ecclesiastical leadership and healthcare administration equips him to address the challenges of modern governance while safeguarding the interests of the Syro-Malabar community.
