Israel Criticizes Western Efforts to Recognize Palestinian State Ahead of UN Assembly

Jerusalem: Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has strongly criticized planned moves by Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September. According to Danon, these initiatives are largely symbolic and fail to address the realities on the ground.

In an interview, Danon accused nations including France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada of attempting to “blow off steam” through declarative statements on Palestinian statehood. He argued that such gestures could undermine ongoing peace efforts, particularly negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.

Danon also highlighted concerns regarding the timing of these declarations, suggesting that they coincide with heightened demands from Hamas, which have affected U.S.-Israel hostage discussions. He expressed skepticism about international proposals to disarm Hamas and establish a reformed Palestinian Authority in Gaza, labeling them unrealistic without tangible changes in the region.

While supporters of Palestinian recognition see it as a step toward a two-state solution, Danon warned that premature recognition might embolden Hamas. He further noted that Arab League support for Palestinian statehood is conditional on the disarmament of Hamas, a condition Israel considers unacceptable.

As the UN General Assembly approaches, the international community remains divided on the issue, with Israel emphasizing that recognition should not be rushed and must align with practical efforts to achieve long-term peace.
