Religious Freedom Integral to Indian Culture, Says Major Archbishop Raphael Thattil

Kochi: Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, has stressed that religious freedom forms an inseparable part of India’s cultural identity. In a circular issued at the conclusion of the second session of the 33rd Synod of Bishops, he cautioned against rising restrictions on the movement and ministry of priests, religious, and lay missionaries, calling such limitations a direct violation of fundamental rights.

India, he noted, has historically embraced “unity in diversity,” creating a space where people of all faiths, castes, and communities co-exist. The Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to believe, practice, and propagate their religion freely, provided it does not undermine the nation’s integrity. “To deny these freedoms is to deny the very spirit of India,” the Archbishop affirmed.

Pointing to the increasing communal campaigns against Christians, Mar Raphael Thattil lamented attempts to reduce the centuries-long contribution of missionaries to a narrow religious agenda. “Christians have served the nation in education, healthcare, and social upliftment, especially among marginalized communities. Ignoring this legacy and fueling hatred against us is deeply unfortunate,” the circular stated.

The Archbishop also recalled with gratitude the sacrifices of missionaries who continue to dedicate their lives to both the Church and society, inspired by their faith in Christ. “Denying them even the basic freedom of movement dishonors their service and violates their constitutional rights,” he warned.

The post-synodal message reaffirmed the Syro-Malabar Church’s commitment to uphold India’s cultural ethos of freedom and inclusivity, while urging society to resist divisive agendas that threaten the nation’s pluralistic fabric.
