Onam Food Orders to Cost More as Zomato Hikes Platform Fee

Ordering a festive feast for Onam this year could pinch your pocket a little harder. Zomato has quietly raised its platform fee from ₹10 to ₹12, just as demand for food delivery is set to skyrocket during the festive season.

The move mirrors rival Swiggy’s earlier decision to push its platform fee up from ₹12 to ₹14. Industry observers say both giants are trying to cash in on the expected surge in orders during Onam and other upcoming festivals, when families increasingly turn to delivery apps for convenience.

Meanwhile, both Zomato and Swiggy are keeping a wary eye on Rapido, which has forayed into the food delivery market under the brand Only. Currently limited to select neighborhoods in Bengaluru, only has made an impression with its significantly lower commission rates. While Zomato and Swiggy charge restaurants anywhere between 16% and 30%, Rapido’s Only keeps fees in the 8% to 15% range.

The pricing shake-up could have a ripple effect on restaurants and customers alike. For families planning elaborate Onam sadhyas via food delivery apps, the extra charge may seem small, but regular users point out that such hikes add up quickly.

With food delivery becoming a near-essential service during festivals, the tussle between established players and new entrants like Rapido is expected to intensify leaving customers with convenience, but at a rising cost.
