Mumbai: West Zone, under the leadership of Shardul Thakur, posted an impressive 363 for six on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone, with Ruturaj Gaikwad playing a dominant innings of 184 runs. Tanush Kotyan remained unbeaten at the crease, adding stability to the West Zone innings.
Shardul Thakur, after winning the toss, elected to bat first. The innings began shakily with Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal falling early for just four runs, followed soon by Harvik Desi, dismissed after scoring a solitary run. However, Ruturaj’s entry at number three shifted the momentum decisively in West Zone’s favor.
Ruturaj showcased an aggressive, ODI-style approach, punishing loose deliveries and anchoring the innings with precision. Facing 206 balls, he struck 15 boundaries and a six, narrowly missing out on a double century before departing the field. Arya Desai contributed 39 runs, while Shreyas Iyer added 25, and Shams Mulani scored 18.
By the close of the day, Tanush Kotyan remained unbeaten on 65, supporting captain Shardul Thakur, who was 24 not out. Central Zone’s bowling attack saw Khaleel Ahmed and Sarnash Jain claim two wickets each, with Harsh Dubey and Deepak Chahar picking one apiece.
West Zone’s commanding total on the first day sets up a strong platform as they look to push for a place in the final, with Ruturaj’s valiant knock proving to be the backbone of their innings.
