Goa Archbishop Urges Aid and Prayers for Flood Victims Across India

Panjim: In a heartfelt appeal to the faithful of Goa, Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão of Goa and Daman has called upon parish priests, heads of church institutions, and local communities to extend both prayers and financial assistance to victims of the recent devastating floods, landslides, and cloudbursts that have struck several Indian states. Issued on September 13, the circular emphasizes solidarity with those affected and encourages active participation in relief and rebuilding initiatives coordinated by Caritas India and local diocesan bodies.

The natural disasters have wreaked havoc across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, claiming over 1,500 lives and leaving many more missing. Thousands of families have been uprooted, with children among the most vulnerable, losing parents or sole breadwinners, and communities struggling to restore livelihoods disrupted by the calamities.

In his message, Cardinal Ferrão expressed the Church’s deep concern and solidarity with those who have suffered loss of life, property, and security. He urged parish communities in Goa to intensify prayers for the victims while contributing generously to the ongoing relief efforts. “It is my humble appeal to seek your generous monetary assistance to respond to those in distress in order to help them rebuild their lives and strengthen their faith in humanity,” the Archbishop wrote.

To ensure widespread engagement, the Archbishop requested parish priests and heads of institutions to announce the appeal during Sunday Masses and community gatherings. He highlighted that collective efforts can make a meaningful difference in alleviating suffering and fostering hope among displaced families. “May the Lord inspire us to be generous and thus share in a special way in His ongoing Mission of Liberation,” Cardinal Ferrão added.

Caritas India has already mobilised teams to assess the extent of damage and coordinate relief measures in collaboration with local Diocesan Social Service Societies. The organization is providing essential support, including food, medical aid, temporary shelter, and assistance for rebuilding homes and livelihoods, targeting the most affected families in each state.

The Archbishop’s appeal underscores the role of faith communities in responding to national crises and highlights the importance of solidarity, compassion, and proactive action in times of widespread suffering. Through prayer, charity, and coordinated relief, the Church in Goa aims to offer hope and support to countless families struggling to recover from the unprecedented natural disasters.
