China Enters Elite Group of Innovative Nations, Germany Slips in Global Rankings

Berlin: China has climbed into the top 10 of the United Nations’ Global Innovation Index for the first time, overtaking Germany, which dropped to 11th place. The annual ranking evaluates countries on research, development, and technological outputs, reflecting the capacity for innovation and economic competitiveness.

China’s rise is attributed to its significant investment in research and development, particularly in the private sector, and its growing dominance in international patent filings. In 2024, China accounted for nearly a quarter of global patent applications, solidifying its status as a leading innovator worldwide.

The top of the index continues to be led by Switzerland, followed by Sweden and the United States. Other countries in the top 10 include South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, and Denmark. While Germany remains a strong industrial innovator, experts note the country faces challenges in shifting towards digital and high-tech sectors to maintain its competitiveness.

The report also highlighted a slowdown in global research and development growth, which is projected to decline to 2.3% in 2025 from 2.9% in 2024—the slowest pace since the 2010 financial crisis. Analysts say this trend poses challenges for countries aiming to sustain innovation momentum, even as China’s influence continues to expand.

China’s inclusion in the top 10 marks a milestone in its ongoing strategy to become a global technology and innovation powerhouse, reflecting its commitment to research, patents, and industrial advancement.
