Thrissur: Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy will be remembered not only as a spiritual shepherd but also as a visionary builder of institutions that reshaped the Church’s mission in Kerala and beyond. One of his greatest contributions was the founding of Mary Matha Major Seminary in Mulayam, Thrissur, an institution that redefined theological formation for generations of priests. Mar Thoomkuzhy envisioned a seminary that was not merely academic but life-oriented one that would form pastors who could respond to the real needs of the faithful. Today, Mary Matha Seminary stands as a vibrant testimony to his foresight, producing priests who embody compassion, wisdom, and a deep pastoral spirit.
His vision also extended to the healthcare sector. Under his leadership, the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute was established, serving as a beacon of healing and hope. What began as a dream soon became a renowned medical center, providing affordable care to the poor while maintaining high standards of medical education. Thousands of lives have been touched through this institution, which continues to thrive as a mission of mercy.
Mar Thoomkuzhy’s commitment to social progress did not stop there. He was instrumental in founding Jyothi Engineering College and several other academic institutions, empowering youth with skills and opportunities for a better future. For him, education was not a privilege for a few but a right for all especially the marginalized and the underprivileged.
Through these initiatives, Archbishop Thoomkuzhy seamlessly blended spiritual leadership with social responsibility. He demonstrated that the Church’s mission extends into classrooms, hospitals, and centers of innovation where human dignity is uplifted, and society is transformed.
