Church and Political Leaders Mourn a Guiding Light

Thrissur: Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, a revered spiritual leader of the Catholic Church in Kerala, passed away on 17 September at the age of 94. His death has evoked deep sorrow across the Church and society, with several leaders offering heartfelt condolences and paying tributes to his exemplary life and service.

Serving as the first Bishop of Mananthavady, Bishop of Thamarassery, and later as Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur, his pastoral contributions remain etched in the memory of the Church and society. He also founded the Sisters of Christ the Light and the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker congregations, leaving a lasting legacy.

Jose K. Mani, MP, remembered him with affection, noting that he was fondly addressed by the faithful as “Thoomkuzhy Pithavu.” He said, “I share in the grief of the faithful and offer heartfelt tributes to Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy.”

 Rajeev Chandrasekhar, state president of BJP Kerala, also expressed his condolences, writing, “Saddened by the passing of Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, who served the Church with distinction as Bishop of Mananthavady & Thamarassery and as Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur. Heartfelt condolences, joining the faithful in grief. #RIP.”

Born in Vilakkumadam, Pala, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy’s life and ministry are remembered as a great blessing to the migrant Christian community in Malabar. His passing is considered an irreparable loss to the Catholic Church in Kerala and to society at large.
