Early Priestly Mission in Thalassery; A Shepherd in the Wilderness

Thalassery: The early priestly journey of Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy was shaped in the rugged landscapes and challenging circumstances of North Malabar. Appointed to serve in the newly formed Diocese of Thalassery, he found himself among migrant communities who had moved from central Kerala to cultivate the forests and hill tracts of Kannur, Wayanad, and Malappuram. These faithful were in dire need of pastoral guidance, spiritual strength, and social support and it was here that Father Thoomkuzhy began to live out his mission as a shepherd in the wilderness.

After completing his doctorate in Canon Law in Rome, he returned to Kerala and was entrusted with responsibilities as Secretary to Bishop Sebastian Valloppilly and Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Thalassery. Yet his ministry was never confined to offices and documents. He embraced the pastoral fieldwork of visiting parishes, serving migrants, and strengthening communities who faced wild animals, diseases, and economic hardship.

One of his early assignments was in Kunduthode parish, where he worked directly with struggling settlers. Life in these remote villages was harsh, with little infrastructure or medical care. But his presence brought hope and reassurance. He offered not only the sacraments but also practical guidance, encouraging education, cooperative initiatives, and community-building. He inspired the faithful to remain rooted in faith while building better futures for their children.

For the migrants, who often felt forgotten and abandoned, Father Thoomkuzhy was more than a priest he was a companion in their struggles. His pastoral visits were marked by genuine listening, empathy, and encouragement. In the midst of poverty and uncertainty, he gave them confidence that the Church walked alongside them.

This mission in the wilderness prepared him for his later roles as bishop and archbishop. The pastoral vision he nurtured in Thalassery one of simplicity, closeness to the people, and attention to the marginalized became a defining mark of his episcopal leadership in Mananthavady, Thamarassery, and Thrissur.

Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy’s early priestly mission was, therefore, not only about serving in difficult terrains but also about planting seeds of faith, resilience, and community life that would flourish for decades to come. His legacy in Thalassery stands as a testimony to how true shepherds embrace the wilderness to bring life and hope to their flock.
