Kochi: The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Conference (KCBC) has expressed profound grief and deep respect at the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, remembering him as a shepherd of rare gentleness, unwavering faith, and extraordinary commitment to the social and spiritual upliftment of the people.
In its tribute, KCBC President Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos reflected on the Archbishop’s lifelong service, calling him “a loving shepherd who held everyone close to his heart, a holy personality who bore witness to Christ through every step of his ministry.” His words captured the essence of Archbishop Thoomkuzhy’s life a man who combined humility with vision and pastoral care with social action.
Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy’s pastoral ministry left an indelible imprint across three dioceses Mananthavady, Thamarassery, and Thrissur where his leadership shaped both the spiritual and social fabric of the community. His six-year tenure as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) was marked by far-reaching initiatives that strengthened the role of the Catholic Church at a national level, while his personal witness inspired countless clergy, religious, and lay faithful.
The Archbishop’s vision also extended to religious life. He played a pivotal role in nurturing and guiding communities of nuns and the Christudas Sisters, empowering them to serve not just within Kerala but in diverse mission fields across India and abroad. These religious communities, formed and inspired under his care, continue to bear fruit for the universal Church through their service in education, healthcare, and social outreach.
The KCBC’s condolence message emphasized that the Archbishop’s leadership was never limited to structures or offices but was rooted in genuine love for people, especially the marginalized and migrant communities. His selfless ministry transformed challenges into opportunities for growth and left behind institutions and movements that will continue to serve society for generations.
Standing in solidarity with the Archdiocese of Thrissur, the dioceses of Mananthavady and Thamarassery, and the Christudas Sisters, the KCBC extended its heartfelt prayers, asking that the eternal Shepherd grant rest to the soul of Archbishop Thoomkuzhy.
