London: The British government is reportedly considering a plan to abolish visa fees for top-tier global talent as part of an effort to boost the UK’s economic growth and global competitiveness. The proposal is being reviewed by a government task force and aims to attract leading scientists, academics, and digital professionals to the country.
Under the plan, visa fees could be waived for individuals who have studied at one of the world’s top five universities or have received prestigious international awards. Currently, the UK charges £766 (around $1,030) for a global talent visa, with an additional fee of the same amount for each dependent.
The proposal comes in response to recent changes in U.S. immigration policy, including the introduction of a $100,000 H-1B visa fee, which has prompted the UK to explore ways to make its immigration system more attractive to high-skilled professionals.
The discussions are ongoing ahead of the UK budget announcement scheduled for November 26. The Treasury and Downing Street have not issued an official comment on the matter.
If implemented, the move would reinforce the UK’s position as a destination for global talent and signal its intent to remain competitive amid shifting international immigration policies.
