Red Cross Sounds Alarm as Ebola Threat Grows in Democratic Republic of Congo

Geneva: The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has issued an urgent appeal for global support as a new Ebola outbreak threatens communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak, which began in early September in the central region of Bulape, represents the country’s first encounter with the virus in three years, raising concerns among public health officials and humanitarian organizations.

Health facilities at the epicenter are struggling to cope with the surge in patients. According to IFRC reports, hospitals and treatment centers are overwhelmed, running beyond full capacity, with shortages of clean water, protective equipment, and essential medical supplies. Frequent power outages have further complicated the delivery of life-saving care. “Without immediate international assistance, the virus could spread rapidly across vulnerable communities,” the Red Cross warned.

As of the last update, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed 48 suspected and probable Ebola cases in Bulape, with 31 fatalities. The main treatment center is operating at 119% capacity, placing extreme pressure on healthcare workers. In response, WHO has begun vaccination campaigns targeting frontline healthcare staff and close contacts in Kasai Province to curb the spread. Red Cross officials emphasize that protecting health workers is paramount to preventing a larger regional crisis.

The IFRC has requested 20 million Swiss francs (approximately $25 million) in emergency funding to bolster containment measures. The resources would support the establishment of treatment units, provision of personal protective equipment, and community engagement initiatives to educate residents on safe practices. International cooperation, the Red Cross stresses, is critical to containing the outbreak and minimizing loss of life.

This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by Ebola in Central Africa. While the DRC has experience managing prior outbreaks, the combination of overstretched medical infrastructure, limited supplies, and remote, hard-to-reach populations makes rapid intervention essential. Humanitarian organizations are calling on governments, donors, and global health agencies to act swiftly to prevent the crisis from escalating further.

IFRC officials continue to coordinate with local authorities, WHO, and international partners to strengthen response efforts, protect frontline workers, and educate communities. The call for urgent support underscores that timely, coordinated action can save lives and prevent Ebola from spreading across vulnerable regions.
