Kerala Catholic Church Bids Farewell to Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy

Kozhikode: The Catholic community in Kerala bid an emotional and historic farewell to Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, whose decades of pastoral ministry left an enduring mark on clergy, faithful, and the wider society. Known for his warm demeanor, wisdom, and deep spiritual leadership, Mar Thoomkuzhy was remembered with reverence during multi-day funeral rites held across Thrissur and Kozhikode.

The first phase of the funeral commenced on September 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Thrissur Archdiocese, where Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath officiated. The mortal remains were then brought to the historic Dollars Basilica at 12:15 p.m. for public viewing. Thousands of faithful, clergy, religious, and representatives from political and social organizations filled the Basilica courtyard, paying homage despite the midday heat.

By 3:30 p.m., a solemn procession carried the Archbishop’s body to Lourdes Cathedral, circling the Thrissur Swaraj Round, as hundreds of devotees lined the streets to pay their respects. The bier was flanked by Monsignor Jason Koonamplakkal, Vicar General of Thrissur, and Sister Jessie Dominic, who had personally ministered to the Archbishop in his final years. Altar servers swung thuribles, spreading incense, while Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop Prince Antony Panengadan of Shamshabad, and Auxiliary Bishop Mar Tony Neelankavil walked alongside in silent prayer.

The Holy Mass at 5:00 p.m. at Lourdes Cathedral was celebrated by Archbishop Thazhath as the main celebrant. Bishop Mar Pauly Kannukkadan of Irinjalakuda delivered the homily, recalling Mar Thoomkuzhy’s pastoral zeal and compassionate mission. Co-celebrants included Bishops Mar Jose Porunnedam, Mar Sebastian Pozholiparambil, Mar Bosco Puthur, and other clergy, making the liturgy a truly statewide tribute. Members of the Kristudasi Sanyasini Samooham, an order founded by Mar Thoomkuzhy, marched alongside the procession, reflecting the Archbishop’s lasting spiritual connection with the faithful.

On September 22, Lourdes Cathedral remained open for public viewing until 9:30 a.m. The second phase began at 9:30 a.m., with former Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Mar George Alencherry, as the celebrant. At 10:00 a.m., Mar Andrews Thazhath commemorated the late Archbishop, highlighting his decades-long dedication to faith, education, and social upliftment.

The third phase of the funeral included a solemn Holy Mass, celebrated by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, with a memorial message delivered by Bishop Mar Joseph Porunnedam of Mananthavady. More than thirty archbishops and bishops participated, reflecting the immense respect Mar Thoomkuzhy commanded across the Church.

Following the liturgical ceremonies, the body was transported to St. Joseph's Church, Devagiri, Kozhikode, for public homage. Prayers were led by Mar Remigius Inchananiyil, Bishop of Thamarassery. Later, the mortal remains were taken to the Home of Love Generalate of the Christudasi Sanyasini community in Kottuli, Kozhikode, where the final burial was held. The Archbishop was laid to rest at the SKD Generalate Chapel, a place closely tied to his lifelong ministry and vision.

The Diocese of Thamarassery declared a holiday for schools and institutions, and parish churches across Kerala held special prayers in memory of the departed prelate. Due to limited space at the Christudasi Generalate, the diocese facilitated live-streaming of the funeral services, allowing faithful across Kerala and beyond to participate spiritually in the farewell.

Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy’s journey from Mananthavady to Thrissur was marked by tireless service, commitment to education, and a vision for social harmony. His leadership extended beyond the altar to the wider community, where he worked to bridge divides and nurture unity. Known for his humility, wisdom, and pastoral compassion, he inspired generations of clergy, religious, and laity alike.

The multi-day funeral drew clergy, religious, politicians, and devotees from across Kerala, reflecting the Archbishop’s profound impact on the Church and society. As Thrissur and Kozhikode united to honor his life, the Catholic community of Kerala mourned the passing of a shepherd whose spiritual guidance and compassionate leadership had touched countless lives. The memory of Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy will continue to inspire and guide the faithful for generations to come.
