Airstrike in Western Niger Kills At Least 30 Near Market

Niamey: At least 30 people were killed in an airstrike near a weekly market in Injar, located in Niger's Tillabery region, which borders Burkina Faso and Mali. Some sources report the death toll could be as high as 37.

The attack struck individuals near the edges of the market, an area previously identified by local authorities as a potential supply point for militant groups. Despite efforts to close the market, residents continued to frequent it, leaving many vulnerable to the strike.

The Tillabery region has been a hotspot for Islamist militant activities, with groups linked to both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda operating in the area. Security operations have intensified since the 2023 coup led by General Abdourahamane Tiani.

Human Rights Watch reported that militants affiliated with the Islamic State have carried out attacks in western Niger, killing more than 127 people in five separate incidents since March.

The Nigerien government has not yet released an official statement regarding the airstrike.
